What is the point about a big wedding?

question from Katherine : What is the point about a big wedding I have friends who are working and saving money to marry. I have married friends who were so in debt that they live with their parents. What is it anyway? I got married in Germany (we were in active service USAF), where the only legal marriage is conducted in the Courthouse. People had the church wedding was treated as extravagance of its legality in court. Since none of us were very religious, we married only in the case. The rings were not replaced in Germany as part of the marriage, so we do not bother with wedding rings, either. We do not have any rings, and we got married 27 Jahren.Also, my question is this: Why would people who moved there to marry until they want to make the socially accepted evidence of the involvement of an expensive dress she'll wear only once ? Why would anyone spend so much on jewelry token to prove their love that they can live with their parents? People get legally married at the Court House in America, too. It is much cheaper than a church. Then just to celebrate a party somewhere. Why do people insist on this major public exhibition, which is so terribly expensive?
