I do not know your financial situation, but I think the rule of thumb is to spend the equivalent of three months of your wages for the engagement ring. But make sure you do research about diamonds, color, clairity, indicates the number of facets, there are several places with you and all the differant qualities diamonds.some show you the differance explain under a microscope, which is very helpful in the production of a choice.you may have cut a poor or a bad color, large or small defects now, almost every diamond flaws.I live in Vancouver, BC, and when I go SPENCE DIAMONDS Diamonds I go buy, they show you the differance clairity between all sorts of varieties, color. Not only with the naked eye, but under a special nicroscope how well they give you some very extensive literature in Requard what huge differance are from one diamond to another, then at hand, take your own stone and see it get under the microscope, and they will point out and give you a detailed documentation of the stone you bought the stone angle, defects if any, recall color, quality etc.also the setting is very important for the general appearance of the stone, how much light through the stone (more brilliant light) goes as in other things in life more important than quality size.after the right choice, you should be given a written test, you will go to a purchase.for small fee you get a different society, an independent assessment of back up.Good luck and can be great fun.
